Great Barrington Opens Applications for Community Impact Fund Grants

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Community groups and organizations are invited to apply for grants from the town's Community Impact Fund, a town-administered fund composed of revenue from cannabis businesses in town.   Applications are due Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. More details and application paperwork can be found here.   For the 2023 fiscal year, the town has earmarked $500,000 for distribution among qualifying organizations, individuals, town committees and town departments seeking support for community benefit projects. This year's distributions will be focused on Health and Safety education and outreach, particularly for youth.   According to a press release,

The Becket Athenaeum, located at 3367 Main Street in Becket,  is holding a two-day book "sale" on Sept. 2 and 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on its front lawn.     A wide variety of books will be available for readers of all ages and interests (fiction, non-fiction, art, gardening, cooking, etc.).     Anyone taking one or more books is simply asked to donate any amount they choose to support the library's operations.

Overnight Hour Construction in South County

LEE, Mass. — Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) crews will be conducting overnight hour pavement milling, and slope, drainage and bridge repair operations on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Lee, Becket, West Stockbridge and Stockbridge.     The work will be conducted at various times and locations from Monday, Aug. 28, through Friday, Sept. 1.   Lane closures will be in place during the construction operations and traffic will be able to travel through the work zones.  The schedule for the work and lane closures will be as follows:   Lee/Becket Slope repair operations will be conducted nightly on I-90 eastbound between mile marker 21.0

Great Barrington Real Estate Transfer Fee Information Meeting

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The Selectboard will host a public input session on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. to discuss a proposal for a 1 percent transfer fee on real estate transactions over $1 million.   Revenue from the transfer fee would be used to support affordable and workforce housing initiatives in Great Barrington.   The agenda for the special meeting (in-person and via Zoom) will be posted on the town calendar by Aug. 29, with Zoom links included.   Any such proposal would first require approval of town meeting voters and then the state legislature. Berkshire Communities Get Culvert Replacement Grants

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration  announced over $6.4 million in grants to strengthen community preparedness for large storms, improve climate-ready infrastructure, restore flood storage capacities, and protect fisheries, wildlife, and river habitat.   The Culvert Replacement Municipal Assistance (CRMA) Grant Program is one of the many resources the administration utilizes to help municipalities replace undersized and deteriorating culverts with crossings that meet improved design standards. 2023 Book One Lecture At Simon's Rock

This week, Tanglewood concludes its magnificently curated, presented and performed 2023 classical music summer festival season with panache by showcasing two live film concert blockbusters: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" on Saturday evening, Aug. 26, and on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 27, John Williams' "Star Wars: The Story in Music" – both performed by the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra under the direction of conductor Keith Lockhart. Added to this will be the violin, cello and piano trio of stellar performers Kavakos, Ax and Ma performing Beethoven. Each of these performances will be in the Shed.
