For most music lovers, Tanglewood in Lenox virtually defines music in the Berkshires. It is the largest summer concert presenter, with the most comprehensive schedule of performances across the full spectrum of musical styles and genres.

Before getting into imminent opening events, bookmark the Boston Symphony’s website, tanglewood.org, for the full summer concert schedule, season highlights, tickets and general information.

Why go? Read below for all the stellar music making scheduled for the upcoming holiday weekend, with superstar performers interpreting great music from across historical eras – much of it beloved favorites of audiences worldwide – in both popular and classical genres. Here’s a capsule preview of these exhilarating and varied musical offerings:

• Friday, July 1, 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and Saturday, July 2 at 2:30 p.m. in Ozawa Hall: Tanglewood presents their traditional String Quartet Marathon featuring string Fellows performing a wide-ranging sampling of individual string quartet movements from across the 250-year continuum of the string quartet repertoire. Be sure to catch the Saturday premiere of Mark Neikrug’s String Quartet No. 5  - a Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) commission.

• Friday, July 1 at 8 p.m. in the Shed: The Boston Pops, led by maestro Keith Lockhart present a “Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration” featuring renowned guitarist Warren Haynes performing “Deadhead” favorites.

• Saturday, July 2 at 7 p.m. in the Shed: The legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan performs with Mavis Staples. Lawn tickets only are available.

• Sunday, July 3, 2:30 p.m. and Monday, July 4, at 8 p.m. in the Shed: James Taylor returns to Tanglewood with his all-star band. Call for ticket availability, as these performances may be sold out.

Tickets for all Tanglewood events can be purchased online at tanglewood.org, via SymphonyCharge, (888) 266-1200, and at the Tanglewood box office located at the main gate, on West Street in Lenox.

Upcoming concerts: Next week, I’ll focus on the opening of Music From Manchester, one of the region’s premiere venues, which opens on Thursday, July 7 and runs through Sunday, August 14. In the meantime, visit their website www.mmfvt.org/concerts to view their full schedule and to purchase tickets.
