Locals Vying for Conference Titles on College Teams

Westfield State senior Jaclyn  Farrell earned six points to help the Owls women’s track and field team win the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Championship last month.
 
The Wahconah alumna placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 11-¼ inches, and she was eighth in the long jump, hitting a mark of 15-7-½.
 
Earlier this spring, Farrell won the triple jump at the Springfield College Invitational, a non-team scored event.
 
Also at the MASCAC meet, Fitchburg State’s Michaella Vecchiarelli (Drury) tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 2.9 meters and helping Fitchburg finish fourth in the conference.
 
Monument Mountain graduate Heather Hassett, a junior at Division I Hartford, finished ninth in the 800 meter run (2:20.66) at last month’s Yale Spring Time Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
 
Emily Kaegi (Mount Greylock) was ninth in third in the 5,000 meters (18:45.42) representing Carleton College at the Janis Rider Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., last month. Earlier in the season, she helped the Knights finish third out of eight teams at their Carleton Invitational.
 
At the Penn Relays last month, Lenox graduate and Georgetown University student Scott Carpenter helped the Hoyas place ninth in the Championship of America Men’s 4-by-Mile. Georgetown is getting ready for next week’s Big East Outdoor Championships in Philadelphia.
 
The Springfield College men’s track and field team and Jason Laramee (Monument Mountain) placed 10th at the New England Division III Championships last weekend. Laramee finished fifth in the high jump.
 
UMass-Boston sprinter Dominic Nda set one meet record and helped set another at last weekend’s Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championships, where he won the 100 in 10.69 seconds. He also ran the anchor leg on the Beacons’ meet record-setting 4-by-100 relay, which finished in 41.31, the sixth fastest time in Division III this season.
 
Union College junior Maxewell Spence (Pittsfield) finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:26.93) at last weekend’s Capital District Classic at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Spence helped the Dutchmen place fifth out of nine teams at the event.
 
Mount Greylock graduate Eric Leitch went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs in his final home game as the Plymouth State baseball team beat Rhode Island College on Thursday to split a Senior Day double-header. Leitch hit .271 with nine RBIs this spring for the Panthers (19-19).
 
Worcester State senior Brian Bonacquisti (Taconic) has a .238 slugging percentage in 22 games at catcher this spring for the Lancers (16-20), who knocked off MCLA in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday. Worcester State is scheduled to host Westfield State on Saturday in the quarter-finals.
 
Elsewhere in those quarter-finals, Framingham State and freshman pitcher Josh Jezouit (Mount Greylock) go to Salem State on Saturday. Jezouit has a 1-2 record in seven games (five starts) with a 6.11 earned run average.
 
Wahconah graduate Matt Schneider has appeared in 25 games this spring at Division II Assumption College. He is hitting .205 with one home run and nine RBIs for the Greyhouds (15-25).
 
UMass Boston pitchers Alex Carusotto and Steve Witkowski, both of Taconic, have seen limited action this spring for the Beacons. Carusotto has a 1.50 ERA in six appearances, striking out three in six innings of work. Witkowski has appeared in three games and pitched three innings. UMass Boston (29-9) goes to Maine to play Rhode Island College on Wednesday in the Little East Tournament.
 
At St. Michael’s College in Vermont, sophomore Dan Flynn (Mount Greylock) has played in 23 games for the Knights (4-25). The infielder is hitting .194 with eight stolen bases in 11 attempts.
 
Elmira College’s Jack Thistle (Mount Greylock) has appeared in 17 games with four starts, compiling a .324 on-base percentage for the 15-14 Soaring Eagles.
 
Quinn Caesar (Wahconah) finished fourth in scoring this spring for the American International College men’s lacrosse team. He has five goals and five assists for the Yellowjackets, who finished 1-16. Caesar scored in overtime to give AIC a 10-9 win over Geogian Court in the Yellowjackets’ season finale.
 
Mount Greylock graduate Brett McCormack has five goals and six assists in 15 games for the 14-1 St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team. The Saints open Liberty League Tournament play on Sunday.
 
For the Worcester State women, senior Chloe Anderson (Mount Greylock) has appeared 15 games and started eight for a team that went 5-13. She made her final appearance in a Worcester State uniform in a loss to Framingham State in the MASCAC quarter-finals.
