WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Due to COVID - 19, the 11th annual Mathias Bartels Community Nordic Ski event is going virtual and global.
Skiers will be able to participate anytime during the week of Feb 14 through the 21. Participants can ski, run or choose another outdoor activity.
Participants are asked to take a photo or video of themselves and to submit it no later than Feb 22.
On Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. a virtual celebration will be held to share experiences and celebrate Bartels. Awards will also be announced.
There will be a local course option: A 6-kilometer course will be set up at Mt. Greylock Regional High School (weather dependent).
Other options: Those out of town, state or country, or unable to ski the Mt. Greylock course are encouraged to choose whatever form of outdoor activity and whatever distance preferred.
Participants will be recognized for:
-
Most kilometers achieved in a single day, most family members participating,
-
Most elevation gain in a single workout,
-
fastest times on the Mount Greylock racecourse, and
-
best photo or video.
As a special reminder of this event, all participants will receive a protective face mask made of fabric with a winter theme sewn by Berkshire Seamsters, a group of immigrant women from Pittsfield.
Donations to the event are welcomed. Proceeds benefit the Mathias J. Bartels Scholarship Fund and the Mt. Greylock Cross Country Ski Team.
Bartels was a Mount Greylock junior and member of the Mt. Greylock Nordic Ski Team. He died in his sleep on Jan. 31, 2004, of sudden cardiac arrest due to a heart arrhythmia of unknown cause.
The Mathias Jessup Bartels Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who exhibits the integrity, kindness, and commitment to excellence shown by Mathias.
