 NEW MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — Dr. Charles Parton served his country in World War II as a 2nd class pharmacist's mate for nearly four years. At 97 years of age, his memory is still sharp as a tack. He went to naval training in Newport, R.I., and remembered "being the last group to go through there. It was great. I learned all the usual stuff, including the difference between and boat and a ship." Dr. Parton's first assignment would keep him in Newport at the U.S. Naval Hospital, where he was involved in special technician training related to electrocardiograms, or ECGs. W.E.B Du Bois Center to Host Elizabeth Freeman Roundtable| 03:40PM / Friday, August 12, 2022 | |
SHEFFIELD, Mass. — The W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Freedom and Democracy of Great Barrington will present a roundtable discussion on the life and legacy of Elizabeth Freeman, the first enslaved African American to successfully sue for her freedom in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The roundtable will take place Friday, Aug. 19, at 4 p.m. at Dewey Hall. A reception will follow the roundtable. This the first in a series of events honoring Freeman's journey to freedom that will take place in Sheffield from Aug. 19-21. A full schedule of events can be found here. Overnight Repair Operations on I-90 Week of Aug. 8 | 12:27PM / Friday, August 05, 2022 | |
 LEE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will be conducting overnight guardrail and bridge repair operations on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Lee and Becket the week of Aug. 8. The guardrail repairs will take place from mile marker 8.0 to mile marker 12.0 in Lee and Becket. The bridge repairs will take place at mile marker 8.5 in Lee. The guardrail work will be conducted beginning Monday, Aug. 8, at 7:00 p.m. and concluding the next morning by 5:00 a.m. The overnight hour work continues each night through Friday morning, Aug.12. The bridge repair work will be conducted on Monday, Aug. 8, and on Tuesday, Aug. 9, during overnight hours from 7:00 p.m.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Maroons and the Crows survived Wednesday’s semi-finals in the Pittsfield Soccer League with a pair of 1-0 wins at Wahconah Park. The second-seeded Crows used a first-half goal from James Pow to knock off Barcelona. On an adjacent field, Matt Naventi scored a first-half goal to send the Maroons past the Vultures and into next Wednesday’s league championship game. Eight teams began play this summer in the 10-year-old league. PSL organizer Nigel Gayle said that about 130 players participated in the weekly seven-on-seven contests.  LEE, Mass. — Diana DiZoglio says the state's payment in lieu of taxes program, or PILOT, should be fully funded, especially with the Bay State having a 2023 budget surplus totaling about $3.6 billion. The Democratic candidate for state auditor visited October Mountain on Tuesday to speak on PILOT reform, which is a priority in her 17-Point Social Justice and Equity Audit Plan.
