Berkshire Community Mobilizes for Harm Reduction 'Days of Action'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Saturday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19, 2025, over two dozen community members will participate in a weekend-long Harm Reduction "Days of Action" across Berkshire County.    Volunteers will distribute lifesaving overdose prevention supplies, resources, and knowledge to residents in areas with higher ratios of opioid-related emergency 911 calls.   Members from Berkshire County public health agencies and substance use awareness groups will partner with community members to raise awareness of changes in the opioid and stimulant supply, particularly among people who use more recreationally. Becker Pond Dam to be Removed to Help Local River System

MT. WASHINGTON, Mass. — The Becker Pond Dam is slated for removal after almost a decade of work from The Nature Conservancy (TNC).

"We've been working on this dam removal for seven years, and are very excited that we're about to start construction in November," said Karen Lombard, The Nature Conservancy's (TNC) Director of Stewardship and Restoration. 

The dam has been closed since 2016 after TNC recognized it as a hazard to the public. The dam is located on TNC’s 1,500-acre Mount Plantain Reserve.

"We were doing some routine monitoring of the Preserve, as we do every year in 2016 and we discovered that the dam was failing and could be a hazard.

Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day is being observed Monday, Oct. 13. As Columbus Day, it commemorates Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas on Oct. 12, 1492. As Indigenous Peoples Day, it commemorates the harm to their cultures and communities that followed Columbus' arrival. 

Columbus' voyage had been celebrated on significant anniversaries but did not become an official holiday until it was recognized by Colorado in 1905. It was declared a federal holiday in 1937.

Israel Frees Sheffield Men Detained on Gaza Aid Flotilla

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — Two Sheffield natives detained by Israeli forces while trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza have been released. 
 
"THEY ARE FREE," the mother of Adnaan and Tor Stumo posted on Tuesday. 

The Stumos were among the hundreds volunteering on the Global Sumund Flotilla to bring food and medical supplies to Gaza when they were intercepted by Israeli Defense Forces. Tor was taken from the Huga boat on Wednesday, and Adnaan from the Mikeno boat near Gaza on Thursday. 

During their detainment, their mother, Nadia Milleron, an aviation and consumer advocate who ran as an independent for Congress in 2024, was searching for her sons

West Stockbridge Opens Dog Park West Stockbridge held a grand opening for its new dog park on Oct. 5. Michael Bolognino, chair of the Friends of West Stockbridge Dog Park, estimated that 100 people attended the opening, along with 50 or so dogs.   The Berkshire Humane Society attended and offered loose leash training, Irie's Pet Pantry also attended and received donations, and a couple of local businesses sold their dog-related wares.   Some funds were also raised to contribute to the ongoing maintenance of the park.   The park is located on 21 State Line Road.   Fairview Hospital Purchases

Lenox Library Association Announces 30th Annual Book Sale

LENOX, Mass – The Lenox Library Association invites the community to its annual two-day book sale on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday Oct. 12, at the Lenox Town Hall, 6 Walker Street, from 9 AM to 5 PM.

The sale will offer more than 8,000 books in 30 categories; all donated from area homes and most in like-new condition. A Special Interest section features collectors' items, including limited editions, signed and first editions, and books from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
