Applications Available for the Governor's Youth Advisory Council

Housatonic Heritage Walk: Monterey Mills

MONTEREY, Mass. — On Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. the Bidwell House Museum will host its final Housatonic Heritage Walk of the 2023 season at the Monterey Library with Rob Hoogs.    According to a press release:   Today, the village of Monterey is small and quaint, but from the 1740s through the late 1800s it was bustling with saw mills, grist mills, carding and fulling mills and a paper mill, as well as stores and other businesses. Housatonic Water Works DPU Hearing on Rate Hike Request

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The town urges Housatonic Water Works (HWW) customers to attend the state Department of Public Utilities (DPU) hearing on HWW's 120 percent rate increase request, on Sept. 26, 7 p.m.   The DPU hearing will be held at Monument Mountain Regional High School.   Due to persistent water quality issues within the HWW system, the town has requested intervener status for the rate case, in order to represent the interests of the town. The HWW is not a town-owned water system; it is a privately owned and operated utility.   The HWW's rate increase would mean that the average HWW customer's bill would rise from $746 to $1,641. GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Pesticides and Children's Health: How Can We Protect Our Community? on Thursday, Sept. 21, 7-8:30 p.m., via Zoom.   The public is invited, and the Zoom link can be found here.   The talk will be presented by Sarah Evans, Ph.D., MPH, She is an assistant professor at the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.    Evans is a neuroscientist focused on public education related to pediatric environmental health. She has created educational campaigns around child exposure to lead, pesticides and endocrine disruptors.

LEE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced that crews will be conducting daytime and overnight hour pavement milling, slope stabilization, bridge and drainage repair operations on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Becket, Otis, Lee, West Stockbridge, Stockbridge, and Blandford.     The work will be conducted at various times and locations from Monday, Sept. 18, through Friday, Sept 22.    Lane closures will be in place during the construction operations and traffic will be able to travel through the work zones.  The schedule for the work and lane closures will be as follows:    Becket/Otis  Slope

Great Barrington Senior Center Closed for Paving Work

Berkshire Communities Receive Highway Funds

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced that MassDOT has received an additional $80 million in funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as part of the annual funding redistribution process.    These redistribution funds represent federal transportation funds that were unable to be used for the programs to which they were originally allocated. New Chief Joins Great Barrington Fire Department

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Scott Turner has joined the Great Barrington Fire Department as its new chief.   Turner, who began his job Sept. 1, has 29 years of experience in fire protection service and has served as the fire chief of Three Rivers Fire Department in the Pioneer Valley since 2013.   He succeeds Charles Burger, who departed the Berkshire region earlier this year.
