Suspect Arraigned in Fatal Stockbridge Hit & Run

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — A West Stockbridge woman has been charged in the hit-and-run that killed Franklin Ripley on Saturday.    Samantha C. Paige, 36, was arrested Tuesday morning and arraigned in Southern Berkshire District Court.   Defendant was charged with leaving scene of personal injury, resulting in death. Judge John P. McKenna set bail at $7,500. However, Paige is being held without the right to bail for a probation warrant issued by Central Berkshire District Court on an unrelated case.   Ripley, 72, of Stockbridge was apparently riding his electric scooter along Route 102 on Saturday morning when he was struck. Wiffle Ball Tournament to Benefit Scholarship Fund

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The fifth annual DZ24 Wiffle Ball Tournament is Saturday, Oct. 19, at Deming Park in Pittsfield.   Teams of four will compete against each other based on age. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each age group.   The cost is $10 per person or $40 per team. MassDOT Advisory: South County Overnight Construction Operations

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that crews will be performing nighttime paving, guardrail, and bridge repair operations along I-90 eastbound and westbound from Monday night, Sept. 30, through Thursday night, Oct. 3.    All work will conclude by 6:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.   Lane closures will be in effect, and traffic will be allowed through the work zones. Scooter Driver Killed in Hit & Run in Stockbridge

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — A man using a scooter was struck and killed Saturday by a hit-and-run driver.    The victim, whose name has not been released, was found lying on the side of road nearly mile marker 4.1 on Route 102. A motorist driving by called 911 at 6:44 a.m. to report seeing someone on the road.    Emergency responders found him unresponsive and he was pronounced dead shortly after by a paramedic from Lee Ambulance.    Based on evidence recovered from the scene, including parts of a car, it appears this is a hit and run incident, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office. CHP Mobile Health Offering Covid Vaccines

CHP Accepting Applicants for Medical Assistant Work-Training Program

ADAMS, Mass. — CHP Berkshires is accepting applications for its next class of medical assistant trainees, a paid on-the-job vocational program for students interested in a career in health care.     Program completion qualifies students for to sit for their certification as a clinical medical assistant, and the course includes a voucher for the cost of the certification exam.   The first class of medical assistant trainees is nearing completion at the CHP training facility in Adams. Beartown State Forest Campground Extends Camping Season

MONTEREY, Mass. — The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced Beartown State Forest is extending the camping season two additional weeks until Oct. 27, 2024.    In July, the campground reopened with more than $350,000 improvements, including modern bathroom facilities and enhanced amenities.     While the campground was closed, DCR made significant upgrades to the site including the installation of two brand new bathrooms equipped with running water and flush toilets, several new water spigots, and updated tables and grills. W.E.B. Du Bois Sculpture Project Awarded Grant

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The W.E.B. Du Bois Sculpture Project has been awarded $50,000 from the Massachusetts Office of Economic Development for completion of a statue of W.E.B.
