CIAO Soccer Hall of Fame Inducts Class of '23

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Community Italian-American Organization Soccer Hall of Fame Thursday inducted 11 new members in a ceremony at Berkshire Hills Country Club.   The Class of 2023 includes former student-athletes who won six Berkshire County MVP awards, 23 all-Berkshire selections, 12 all-Western Mass selections and three all-Massachusetts selections.   In addition to recognizing the great players of past high school soccer seasons, CIAO honored 21 current high school seniors with the annual CIAO Hall of Fame Scholarships.   Scholarship recipients include: Rylee Joy and Neal Brierley, Drury; Tia Kareh and Owen Dubrueil, Hoosac Valley; Isabella Lovato, Lee; Hailey

John Staber Receives Wright Brothers Award

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — John H. Staber of Old Chatham, N.Y., is to receive the Federal Aviation Administration Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award this Saturday.    This is to commemorate his more than 50 years of accident-free flying and devoting much of his career to teaching others.    The presentation will be made at noon by Adina M. Papp, FAA Safety Team Program manager, at the Walter J. Koladza Airport located on Route 71.     While he is certified to fly most Beech, Cessna and Piper light aircraft, Staber has also specialized in maintaining and teaching the art of seaplane flying in Lake Amphibians.   He received his private pilot

Turtles Must be Left in the Wild

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says keeping native turtles as pets is prohibited because it can harm the turtle and pose threats to wild turtle populations.   "Capturing a wild turtle and keeping it as a pet, even if only for a short time, is detrimental to that individual turtle and also to Vermont's turtle populations as a whole," said Vermont Fish and Wildlife herpetologist Luke Groff.  "Releasing captured turtles back into the wild comes with risks as well."     Groff said the risks include introducing diseases or disrupting the genetics of wild populations.    "Adult turtles often have

Stockbridge Man Pleads Guilty, Must Register as Sex Offender

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — On Tuesday, May 2 Joseph Smith, 45, of Stockbridge pled guilty to several charges stemming from a 2020 investigation involving photographs of an underage female.    Smith was sentenced to 5 years probation with conditions. The conditions are that he undergo a sex offender evaluation and cooperate with aftercare as recommended; further undergo a mental health evaluation with aftercare as recommended; sign waivers for the Superior Court Probation Department so that they can monitor his progress; have no access to internet and no computers/internet-enabled devices except at a public library or law library as needed to complete his evaluations and/or
