PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire County residents this weekend gathered to recognize the nation's shameful past, celebrate the accomplishments of present-day artists and scholars and commit to the struggle to build a better future.   Juneteenth festivals were held in North Adams on Saturday and Pittsfield on Sunday, giving attendees an opportunity to think about the continuing legacy of slavery in America while marking June 19, 1865, when enslavement officially came to an end for Black residents of Texas, the last state to see emancipation take place.   North Adams' inaugural Juneteenth event, "I Am Afro: A Street Fair for All the People," was organized

Lee Man Sentenced for Indecent Assault and Battery

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Monday, June 16, Dillon Curtin, 31 of Lee, was sentenced to two years in the House of Corrections.   Charges include Dissemination of Photograph of a Person in the Nude without Consent and two years' of probation to follow for Possession of a Firearm without a Firearms Identification Card, Improper Storage of a Firearm-10H (within a home), Possession of Class B Controlled Substance, Possession of Class C Controlled Substance, Possession of Class E Controlled Substance, and Indecent Assault and Battery.    Conditions of probation are to register with Sex Offender Registry Board; possess no weapons; have no contact and stay away from the victim;

Great Barrington Proposes Filtration Subsidy for HWW's Housatonic Customers

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Town Manager Mark Pruhenski has recommended a $500 town subsidy to Housatonic Water Works (HWW) customers in Housatonic who install, or have installed, a water filtration system to address water quality issues.   This subsidy comes from a $250,000 state economic growth and relief earmark provided to the town to assist customers impacted by the HWW water quality issues. The subsidy would be available only to HWW customers living or owning a business in Great Barrington/Housatonic.   The subsidy would be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018, to help HWW customers who have already invested in filtration. The funding for customers is subject to proof of purchase

Great Barrington Names Director of Council on Aging

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Joan Peters of Great Barrington has been promoted to director of the Great Barrington Council on Aging, and in her new role will lead operations at the Claire Teague Senior Center.   Peters, previously the administrative assistant at the Teague Center, has served as interim COA director since the retirement of Polly Mann Salenovich this spring.   The Teague Center serves older residents of Great Barrington and the wider South County region with services, programs and advocacy resources. While focused on seniors, the Center's many programs and activities – fitness, dance, art and other classes -- are open to area residents of all ages.

'Call of the Wild' at the Great Barrington Library

Construct Announces First-Time Homebuyers Closing Cost Grant

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Construct has announced a "final mile" closing cost grant of $2,500 available to low-to-moderate-income south Berkshire County residents to help create access to home ownership.    Massachusetts State Representative William "Smitty" Pignatelli successfully introduced an amendment to the Massachusetts American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in the Fiscal 2023 Budget, appropriating $100,000 for a Berkshire County first-time home buyers' program.    Working with area mortgage brokers, Construct administers the funds to provide eligible candidates with "final mile grants" for closing expenses. South County Overnight Paving, Bridge and Guardrail Operations

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced that crews will be conducting overnight paving operations and bridge and guardrail repair work on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Montgomery, Russell, Blandford, Lee, Becket, Stockbridge and West Stockbridge.    The scheduled work will require some lane and shoulder closures, and is scheduled to take place as follows:   Montgomery/Russell Bridge repair work will be conducted nightly on I-90 eastbound and westbound at mile marker 36.0 from Sunday, June 11, to Friday, June 16, during overnight hours from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning.  All work is anticipated to

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT)announced that it will conduct daytime drainage structure repair operations on I-90 westbound from mile marker 5.0 to mile marker 0.0 in Stockbridge.    The work will occur daily from Monday, June 12, through Thursday, June 15, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.   Signs, traffic control devices, temporary detour signs and variable message boards will be used to guide drivers through the area.   MassDOT encourages drivers to reduce speed and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone and to allow for extra time through this area.
