Berkshire Green Drinks: Land Stewardship in a Changing Environment

PITTSFIELD, Mass. Robin Sears, the executive director of Williamstown Rural Lands, will speak at Berkshire Environmental Action Team's monthly Berkshire Green Drinks gathering on Wednesday, Jan.11, at 6 PM via Zoom.

Robin will discuss the mission, activities, and duties of local land trusts, outline how our natural environment and local demographics are changing, and consider management options for land stewards to respond to and anticipate the needs for ecosystem resilience.

BCC and BRPC Offer Free 'Choke Saver' Training Certification

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —Berkshire Community College (BCC) and Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) will offer a free Choke Saver Training class offered on various dates in several locations throughout Berkshire County.     The 75-minute class provides participants with a two-year certification.    Local businesses, such as restaurants, that are required to have Choke Safe certified individuals on site are particularly encouraged to participate. CHP Family Services Hosts IEP 101 Workshop

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Community Health Programs (CHP) Family Services hosts IEP 101, an online workshop and orientation program for parents of public school children who are entitled to special needs education services, on Jan. 11 at 11 a.m.    This is the third such online event hosted by CHP Family Services, which has new resources for families of children with special needs. Berkshire Grown Gets $550K Grant

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The $550,000 Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA) Grant will strengthen Berkshire Grown's purchasing relationships with socially disadvantaged farmers through their Berkshire Farm to Food Access Partnership Program to distribute to new and existing food sites.   The initiative will establish an online ordering system, update purchasing contracts, expand the selection of local food and farm products, recruit volunteers for food delivery, prepare food storage locations, and distribute the food and farm products to underserved communities.   The grant funds a collaborative partnership that includes

Great Barrington Receives Grant for Sidewalks

BOSTON — Great Barrington received $303,970.00 in Complete Streets funding for the construction of new sidewalks on West Avenue and Lewis Avenue.    The project will also improve six bus stops, including new ADA-compliant waiting areas and lighting.   The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), on behalf of the Baker-Polito Administration, announced that $6.65 million has been awarded to 15 communities as part of the Fiscal Year 2023 Round 2 of grants for the Complete Streets Funding Program.    "The Complete Streets Funding Program has now awarded $90 million in total funding through 463 technical assistance and construction awards since

Berkshire Agricultural Ventures Awards Grant to Gould Farm

BEAT Green Drinks Goes Countywide

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After nearly 15 years of hosting their monthly Pittsfield Green Drinks gathering, Berkshire Environmental Action Team (BEAT) is expanding their Green Drinks from Pittsfield to county-wide, making it 'Berkshire Green Drinks'.   Before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pittsfield Green Drinks took place exclusively at a restaurant or pub in Pittsfield. Starting in 2023, BEAT will begin changing the location of their in-person gatherings to different towns throughout Berkshire County every month.    They're also changing the monthly events to the second Wednesday of every month instead of the third Tuesday.   BEAT hopes to offer

Avian Influenza Circulating in Vermont

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is reminding the public to take precautions around wild birds, as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to circulate in the state.   Backyard flocks of domestic birds in Caledonia and Lamoille Counties have had to be destroyed after exposure to the virus, commonly known as avian flu.   "Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in more than 70 wild birds since March, with cases reported most months and in every region of the state," said Wildlife Program Manager David Sausville.  "Many exposures come from migrating birds, so we expect case numbers to drop as winter
