Sheffield Land Trust Winter Lecture at Dewey Hall

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — On Sunday March 12 at 2:30pm the Sheffield Land Trust is hosting its 25th Annual Winter Lecture which this year is a slide show and presentation on "Our Changing New England Forests" by Tom Zetterstrom, illustrated by some of his prize-winning photographs.    This will be a hybrid event, with options to attend in person at Dewey Hall in Sheffield or by Zoom through registering ahead of time.   According to a press release:    New England was once covered with trees. State to Improve Route 23 Near Monterey Town Line

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. – The state will spend $385,000 to improve a half-mile section of Route 23, just west of the Monterey town line.   The project, funded by the state Department of Transportation, will take place during the 2023 construction season.   "This is a sizable investment and an important project, which is among a number of others that will get underway during this year's construction season," said Joe Aberdale, the town's superintendent of public works.   His department will announce additional projects in the coming weeks, as spring construction season approaches.   The Route 23 work includes repaving, drainage, lane markings,

Peru Searches for Feasible Solution to Damage Fire Department Vehicles

PERU, Mass. — The Peru volunteer Fire Department and town are searching for a feasible solution for the department's run-down vehicles.    Peru Fire Chief Jesse Pelkey said the department's fire engine and rescue vehicle are both old and damaged making it more difficult to provide services to the town.    The Select Board was informed that the engine would not pass inspection in mid-February when it was subsequently taken out of service.    With the fire engine permanently parked, Pelkey said the department is unable to respond to an emergency with only one vehicle that has all the needed equipment.  Instead, they have to respond with

Closure of Norfolk Road Bridge over the Umpachene River In New Marlborough

NEW MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced it will be implementing a full closure of the Norfolk Road Bridge located over the Umpachene River in New Marlborough.  The closure will begin on Monday, March 6, and is needed to facilitate bridge repair operations.     The bridge is anticipated to be re-opened to travel in July.   A detour, which will be in effect for the duration of the closure, will utilize Mill River Southfield Road, Lumbert Cross Road, and Canaan Southfield Road.    Message boards, signs, traffic control devices, and police details will be used to guide drivers safely through the work

Nutritionist Michelle Sisk Joins CHP

Sisk, RDN, LDN, CDN.     In her new role, Sisk will work primarily as a culinary nutritionist with the CHP Nutrition Club, which provides nutrition services to patients of Berkshire Fallon Health Collaborative (MassHealth). She will counsel patients mainly through telehealth, and will also lead culinary nutrition and education programs.     A graduate of Marymount College of Fordham University, Sisk holds a bachelor of science degree in nutrition, and she completed her dietetic internship at the University of Connecticut and Hartford Hospital.

Legislature Recommends Great Barrington Native for Postal Honor

BOSTON  — The Legislature on Monday adopted a resolution recommending that Dr. May Edward Chinn, a native of Great Barrington, be honored by the U.S. Postal Service through its Black Heritage Stamp Series.    The joint resolution of the state House and Senate recognizes the pioneering contributions of Chinn in the field of medicine in celebration of Black History Month. The resolution was jointly presented by state Sens. Paul Mark of Peru and Liz Miranda of Roxbury and state Rep. William "Smitty" Pignatelli of Lenox.    Her biography posted on the National Institutes for Health page states Chinn was born in Great Barrington on April 15, 1895, to
