Mahaiwe Adds Virtual Drama and Art to Programming Schedule

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.—The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center announced the addition of six virtual screenings from the entertainment outfit BY Experience to its programming schedule: art documentary "Frida La Vida," March 17 to 23; "War Horse" from London's National Theatre, March 31 to April 6; "Kinky Boots" from London's West End, April 14 to 20; art documentary "Secret Impressionists," April 28 to May 4; "42nd Street from London's West End," May 12 to 18; and art documentary "Hermitage – The Power of Art," May 26 to June 1.
 
BY Experience produces Mahaiwe's popular in-theater HD screening series from London's National Theatre, Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet, and the Metropolitan Opera. 
 
"We are excited to offer the best of BY Experience programs online until we can all be watching the together again,” said Mahaiwe Executive Director Janis Martinson. "These recordings remind us of the spark that is lit when an audience, in a darkened theater, watches a great show together. The National Theatre of London and London's West End productions are some of the best and most inventive in the world. And now, Mahaiwe audiences have the chance to tour — virtually — some of the world's best museums, as well.” 
 
The Great Art on Screen documentary "Frida La Vida" screens online from Wednesday, March 17 to Tuesday, March 23. The film features interviews with Hilda Trujillo Soto, the director of the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City and Cristina Kahlo, Frida Kahlo's grandniece; historical documents, photographs, clothes, and other personal items belonging to Frida, kept in the archives of the Frida Kahlo Museum and normally not accessible to the public; captivating reconstructions; and Kahlo's own paintings, on display in some of the most amazing museums in Mexico.
 
"War Horse" from London's National Theatre screens online from Wednesday, March 31 to Tuesday, April 6. War Horse is a powerfully moving and imaginative stage drama, a show of phenomenal inventiveness, filled with stirring music and songs. At its heart are astonishing life-size puppets by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses thrillingly to life on stage. The play is based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford.
 
"Kinky Boots" from London's West End will screen online from Wednesday, April 14 to Tuesday, April 20. "Kinky Boots" features songs by Grammy- and Tony-winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray), and book by Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles). lnspired by true events, the musical tells the true story of Charlie Price, the new owner of his late father's Northampton shoe factory. Trying to live up to his father's legacy and save the family business from bankruptcy, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, an entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible, and discovers that when you change your mind, you can change the world.
 
Great Art on Screen documentary "Secret Impressionists" screens online from Wednesday, April 28 to Tuesday, May 4. "Secret Impressionists" reveals the story of the art revolution sparked by the Impressionist movement of the late 1800s. The art documentary unveils 50 previously unseen works by Impressionist masters Manet, Caillebotte, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Signac, Sisley, and Morisot. 
 
"42nd Street from London's West End" screens online from Wednesday, May 12 to Tuesday, May 18. Captured from the London stage and directed by the original author of the show, Mark Bramble.
 
Great Art on Screen documentary "Hermitage – The Power of Art" screens online from Wednesday, May 26 to Tuesday, June 1. The  documentary event tours through St. Petersburg's State Hermitage Museum, a complex of buildings with the largest collection of paintings in the world, to retrace two and a half centuries. Audiences pass through the interiors that provided a meeting point for foreign artists, architects and intellectuals creating connections through art and culture.
 
Viewers select a time slot from many options within each title's date-span. Tickets range from $10 to $15. For more information and access, see mahaiwe.org.
