The University of Rhode Island in Kingston celebrates more than 4,000 of its newest alumni during its 135th commencement held over three days, May 21-23.

Two Berkshire County graduates have been accepted to Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., as a member of the class of 2025. Gracie Towler of North Adams will be majoring in electrical engineering and Kate Kerwood of Pittsfield will be majoring in aeronautical engineering.

Michael Maruk of Pittsfield, a student at Lasell University in Newton, presented at the university's Spring Symposium research showcase "The Invention of Now." The Spring Connected Learning Symposium is one of two annual research symposia held at Lasell University.
 
He participated in a video presentation, "What Does Conscious Awareness Mean To Me?" as one of Lasell's resident assistants.
 
Elmira (N.Y.) College presented its annual Key Award to 790 students from 14 states. A tradition that goes back to 1935, the Key Award is presented to outstanding students in their junior year of high school or preparatory school. Recepients included: Natalie Pompi and Piper Schulman, both of Adams; Liam Andersen and Devyn Haley, both of Dalton; Justin Pantoja and Eleanor Hull, both of Housatonic; Odegaard Fields of Mill River; and Kayden Lovallo and Alyssa Potvin, of Pittsfield.
 
"This award is given to students with the potential to excel academically, serve as leaders, and go on to enjoy success in life," said Charles Lindsay, president of Elmira College. "We hope they will choose to make Elmira College their place."
 
Sponsored by the EC Alumni Association, the Key Award recognizes students for high scholastic achievement, leadership, citizenship, and participation in extracurricular activities.
 
Daisy Dominguez of Pittsfield has enrolled at the State University of New York at Delhi. Dominguez is pursuing a degree in Veterinary Science Technology.
 
 
Jacob Hane of Williamstown was named the recipient of the Chauncey S. Truax Prize Scholarship in Greek at Hamilton College's annual convocation ceremony on Aug. 25 in Clinton, N.Y. Hane, a senior majoring in classical languages, is a graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School.
 
The scholarship is awarded to the senior who has stood highest in the study of Greek for the first three years with an average grade of no less than 85. Preference is given to candidates who entered Hamilton as first-year students with credit in Greek.
 
He was also selected as a tutor in the Oral Communication Center at Hamilton College for the 2021-22 academic year. The center's mission is to support Hamilton's educational goals by developing students' abilities to express themselves with clarity and eloquence.
 
 
Samuel Dils of Williamstown has been chosen as a tutor for the Nesbitt-Johnston Writing Center at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., for the 2021-22 academic year. The Writing Center was established in 1987 to help all Hamilton students strengthen their writing abilities. Dils, a senior majoring in literature, is a graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School.
 
 
Jack Pudlo of Dalton is one of the new transfer students for the fall 2021 semester at Nichols College in Dudley. 
 
 
St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., has welcomed Colin D. Young of Pittsfield as a member of the class of 2025. Young attended Lenox Memorial High School.
 
 
Patrick McKinney of Pittsfield played the character of Ryan in the Dean College production of "The Theory of Relativity" this October. Through a collection of songs, scenes and monologues, the play introduces an array of characters experiencing the joys and heartbreaks, the liaisons and losses, the inevitability and the wonder of human connection. It was presented by special arrangement with Musical Theatre International Enterprises Inc.
 
Lasell University in Newton began its fall semester with a fully operational campus, in-person activities, and a strong cohort of new students including Gabrielle Mantello of North Adams, majoring in event management, and Spencer Villinski of Pittsfield, majoring in fashion merchandising and management. 
 
Luke Peplowski of Pittsfield recently matriculated as a first-year student at Hamilton College. Peplowski, a graduate of Pittsfield High School, was selected from a pool of 9,380 applicants to the college, and joins a class of 533.
 
 
Luke Maynard of Pittsfield joined the thousands of alumni who wear The Citadel class ring. More than 550 cadets at the Charlestown, S.C., school, active duty and veteran students from the class of 2022 were celebrated during the Ring Presentation Ceremony on Friday, Oct. 1, after marching across Summerall Field, directly into Summerall Chapel, where the rings were presented.
 
"The presentation of the rings represents our commitment to The Citadel and our accomplishments as a class," said Cadet Kathryn Christmas, regimental commander of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. "The class of 2022 has been waiting patiently for this day. We will wear them proudly."
 
 
Isabelle Bote of Williamstown is an emergency medical technician at Hamilton College this year. The Clinton college's Emergency Medical Service is a New York State-certified agency that is made up of 23 student EMTs who provide 24-hour emergency service to the campus community during the academic year.
 
EMTs each volunteer 30-40 hours a week, during which time they are on call to assist anyone needing medical attention. On average, the EMTs respond to 50-60 medical emergencies on campus each semester. Hamilton will be recognizing the achievements of its EMTs during National Collegiate EMS Week, the week of Nov. 8.
 
Bote, a senior majoring in art history, is a graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School.
 
 
Emerson College students including Esther Chilson of Berkshire participated in the Boston college's production of "The Late Wedding" that ran from Sept. 23-26 in the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theater. The play is a series of disjointed vignettes of marriage and work-worn love over space and time. Chilson, a first-year student, is majoring in stage and production management.
 
 
Donovan Sawyer of Monterey is one of the 31 students appointed to the inaugural Nichols Senior Advisory Council by Nichols College President Glenn M. Sulmasy. The council is composed of students who have played significant leadership roles in the Nichols community. Their role is to advise the president and senior administration on issues related to the senior class and the college in general.
 
Sulmasy reported receiving an "overwhelming number" of nominations for this first council, adding, "These students should be quite proud of this appointment."
 
 
Patrick McKinney of Pittsfield was an understudy for the Dean College production of "I Hate Hamlet" that ran early in December. McKinney, a graduate of Pittsfield High, is studying theater at the Franklin college. 
 
 
Alyssia Bonacquisti of Pittsfield was recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Bonacquisti was initiated at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.
 
 

Graduations

Clark University in Worcester awarded 490 bachelor degrees, 501 master degrees, and 10 doctorates, and conferred three honorary degrees during the university's 117th commencement ceremonies this past spring. Graduates were urged to ask the hard questions, drive change, and even occasionally stir some trouble. Among the graduates were Audriana Esperat, of Pittsfield, earning a master of business administration and Setareh Margaret Rossman of West Stockbridge, graduating with a master of arts in psychology.
 
Maria Deblois of Readsboro was one of 147 students who graduated from practical nursing certificate program at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center this past spring. 
 
Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology conferred more than 4,000 degrees at all of its campuses in the 2020-2021 academic year. Due to New York state COVID-19 occupancy restrictions, commencement was celebrated May 14-15 in smaller ceremonies by college and were live-streamed for graduates' family and friends. Local residents earning degrees were:
  • Lukas Yelle of Adams, bachelor of science in applied arts and sciences
  • Evan Delmolino of Adams, bachelor of science in computing security
  • Eli Cunningham of Pittsfield, bachelor of science in computer science
  • Kevyn Harris of Pittsfield, bachelor of fine arts in film and animation
  • Jason Konowitch of Pittsfield, master of science in materials science and engineering
Springfield Technical Community College held a virtual graduation ceremony on June 18 to recognize graduates from fall 2020, spring 2021 and summer 2021. Among the graduates were Nathan Turner of Housatonic, Jasinda Brooks of Pittsfield and Cassandra Redd, also of Pittsfield, who earned high honors. 
 
Nichols College in Dudley conferred diplomas on 245 undergraduate students at an in-person commencement on May 15, including bachelors of science in business administration to Brodie Altiere of North Adams, majoring in general business, and Thomas Astle of Pittsfield, majoring in sports management.
 
 
The University of Rhode Island in Kingston celebrated more than 4,000 of its newest alumni during its 135th commencement on May 21-23. Among the graduates were Monica Katherine Thomas of Adams, bachelor of science in nursing; Emmaline Elizabeth Cote of Dalton, bachelor of science in biological science and a bachelor of arts in Spanish, summa cum laude; and Annalise Ellsworth of Dalton, bachelor of science in animal science and technology, summa cum laude.
 
Tufts University in Medford awarded approximately 1,500 undergraduate students degrees during its online degree conferral ceremony for the class of 2021. The graduates from the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering included Elias Sekkal of Williamstown, who earned a bachelor of science degree in quantitative economics, summa cum laude.
 
Will Dyer Kloman of Lenox graduated after majoring in rhetoric and minoring in education at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Kloman, the son of Alexander S. Kloman and Danielle A. Dyer, is a 2017 graduate of Berkshire School.
 
The University of Hartford in West Hartford, Conn., graduated the following local students this past spring: Emily McWhirt of Adams, Leigh Duffin, Heather Hassett and Emily Rada, all of Great Barrington, and Emily Kestyn of Pittsfield.
 
 
Von Deneb Helera Vitto of Dalton received a doctor of nursing practice from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa during its summer commencement ceremonies on July 31.
 
 
Cody Latimer of Pittsfield graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration degree in accounting during Bryant University's 158th commencement on May 22. He was one of 840 member of the Smithfield, R.I, school's class of 2021.
 
 
Samuel Mahan of Williamstown has earned a professional master's in applied systems engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Mahan was among approximately 1,480 undergraduate and graduate students who earned degrees during the summer 2021 semester.
 
 
Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., recognized nearly 350 students during its in-person summer 2021 commencement ceremony, held Friday, Aug. 6, at the HTC Center. Among the graduates was David Charland, a engineering science major from Pittsfield.
 
 
 

Academic Awards & Lists

College of the Holy Cross in Worcester named more than 1,451 students to the spring 2021 dean's list. Among them were the following local students: Molly Flynn of Great Barrington, history and political science; Alison Howard of Williamstown, accounting; and Pittsfield residents Joseph Cracolici, accounting and music; Lauren Daury, mathematics; Jena Kaddoura, political science; Daniella Santamarina, visual art history and psychology, and Samantha Scoco, political science and sociology.
 
Mary Hines of Pittsfield was named to the dean's list at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, for the 2020-21 spring semester. She is studying media and culture and political science.
 
 
 
Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology has named the following students to the spring 2021 dean's list:

The following local residents were named to the dean's list at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., for the spring 2021 semester: Riley Nichols of Pittsfield, a May graduate who majored in philosophy, and four are Mount Greylock Regional School graduates from Williamstown: rising seniors Isabelle Bote majoring in art history, Samuel Dils majoring in literature and Jacob Hane majoring in classical languages, and rising sophomore Xavier Vilaubi. 
 
Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., named the following Pittsfield residents to the deans' list for the spring 2021 semester: Lindsey Coe, Julia Haddad and Sara Curry.
 
In recognition of their outstanding academic achievement, Emmanuel College in Boston has named nearly 900 students to the dean's list for the spring 2021 semester, including: Kostandinos Cami of Great Barrington, Autumn Duke of Housatonic and Nichole Lapierre and Cole Lander, both of Pittsfield.
 
The University of Hartford in Connecticut has named the following students to the honors lists for spring 2021.
 
President's honors list: Emily Rada of Great Barrington, Derek Alibozek and Mya Daigneault, both of Adams, Karley Deets of Lenox, and Emily Kestyn, Ryan Lapierre and Thomas Rabasco, all of Pittsfield.
 
Dean's list: Drew Demartino of Pittsfield, Caroline Hadley of New Ashford, Abigail Tynan of Pittsfield and Brayden Smith of Williamstown.
 
John Cosmus of East Otis was named to the dean's list for the spring 2021 semester at the State University of New York at Delhi.
 
Tufts University in Medford has named the following students to the dean's list for the spring 2021 semester: rising seniors Matthew Diamond of Great Barrington and Lili Mooney of Pittsfield, and rising juniors Maddie Albert of Lanesborough and Katrina Hotaling of North Adams.
 
Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., has named the following students to the spring dean's list: graduates Olivia Bresett of Adams, biomedical engineering; Steven Crouch of Adams, mathematics; Adam Hall of Williamstown, mechanical engineering; and Hannah Weeks of Pittsfield, Spanish and Hispanic Studies; and rising seniors Raphael Kummer-Landau of Great Barrington, electrical engineering; William Sohl of Pittsfield, political science, and Mitchell Stechmann of Pittsfield, American Studies.
 
Natalie Celebi of Pittsfield has been named to the dean's list at Purchase (N.Y.) College for the spring 2021 semester. She is studying creative writing.
 
Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester has named the following students to its summer honors list.

Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., has named is Vanessa Harrington of Cheshire to the spring 2021 dean's list.
 
Stonehill College in Easton has named Mackenzie Ellis and Hayley Tobin, both of Pittsfield, to the dean's list for the fall 2021 semester.
 
 
Evan Brierley of North Adams, a sophomore at York (Pa.) College, was named to the dean's list for the fall 2021 semester.

Mitchell Bath of Williamstown, was named to the Milwaukee School of Engineering's dean's list with high honors for the 2021 fall quarter. Bath is pursuing a bachelor of science in computer engineering.

Giovanni Cavalli of Williamstown, a sophomore at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., has earned a dean's award with distinction for the spring 2021 semester. Mount Greylock Regional School graduate is majoring in biology.
