Composting with Bears in Mind

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says many people are having problems with bears looking for food near their homes, and with the food scrap ban in effect the department is providing tips for people who are composting at home so they can avoid attracting hungry bears. 

"We have been receiving lots of reports of bears on decks, tearing down bird feeders, wrecking beehives, killing chickens, and getting into trash, compost and garbage containers," said bear biologist Jaclyn Comeau.  "We are offering some guidance on how to compost at home without attracting bears."

Animal Adventures at the Richmond Library

RICHMOND, Mass. — The Richmond Free Public Library will host a live animal presentation by Animal Adventures for children and adults on Saturday, July 8 at 11:00 a.m.    Animal Adventures will bring 8 -10 exotic animals and present them in an hour-long session where the audience will get to pet the animals.  The animals may include an alligator, snake, chinchilla, ferret, hedgehog, rat, bunnies and different kinds of reptiles, lizards and amphibians.    Weather permitting, this program will be held outside in the back of the library.  This program is funded by the Richmond Cultural Council.

Paving, Bridge and Guardrail Repair in Lee, Becket

LEE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced that crews will be conducting overnight and daytime hour paving operations, bridge, and guardrail repair work on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Lee and Becket.    The scheduled work will require some lane and shoulder closures on July 5, July 6, and July 7:   Lee/Becket Pavement operations will be conducted nightly on I-90 eastbound from mile marker 14 to mile marker 20, from Wednesday, July 5, to Friday, July 7, during overnight hours from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning.  All work is anticipated to conclude by 5:00 a.m. on Friday, July 7.

Museum Set to Open in Lee, Seeks Volunteers

Sandisfield Arts Center Prize for Young Artists Deadline Extended

SANDISFIELD, Mass. — The Sandisfield Arts Center announced the 2nd annual Daniel Manacher Prize for Young Artists with an extended entry deadline on July 8.    Three winners will receive $350 in support of their art practice, as well as a group show of their work at the Sandisfield Arts Center on August 19, 2023.   The prize was created by Adam Manacher and Carol Birnbaum, the parents of Daniel Manacher, in memory of their son and his passion for art.   "Daniel worked on different surfaces, always hand-drawn," said his father, Adam Manacher. Card Pond Party Postponed Until July

WEST STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — The town will hold a party celebrating the opening of Card Pond for the season on  July 23.   The party starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m.   There will be live music, food, and beach and yard games.   This is a free community event sponsored by West Stockbridge Parks and Recreation.   The party was initially planned for June 25 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
