Berkshire Agricultural Ventures Appoints New Executive Director

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.— Berkshire Agriculture Ventures (BAV) announced the appointment of Rebecca Busansky as the new Executive Director, following the tenure of interim Executive Director, Glenn Bergman.    Under Bergman's guidance, BAV experienced remarkable growth, as he built a team of experts to lead BAV's programs, and secured support for the organization's initiatives. More Than 400 Compete in Steel Rail Races

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Williamstown's Alex White was the first runner across the finish line at Sunday's MountainOne Steel Rail Marathon on the Ashuwilticook Trail.   White maintained a 6 minute, 26 second per mile pace over the 26.2 mile course from Pittsfield to Adams and back.   He reached the finish line in 2:48.42.41 to finish 5-1/2 minutes ahead of the rest of the other 72 runners who finished the event's marathon division.   The fastest finisher in the marathon was Stephen Gulley of Billingham, the event's lone hand pedaler, who finished in 2:20:05.36.   The first female runner across the finish line was Assonet's Hailey Desmarais

Lee, Becket, Overnight Bridge and Guardrail Repair

LEE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing crews will be conducting bridge and guardrail repair work on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Lee, Montgomery, Russell, Becket and Blandford.    The scheduled work will require some lane and shoulder closures, and is scheduled to take place as follows:   Lee   Guardrail repair operations will be conducted nightly on I-90 eastbound and westbound from mile marker 10.5 to mile marker 14.0, from Monday, May 22, to Friday, May 26, during overnight hours from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning.  All work is anticipated to conclude by 5:00 a.m. on Friday, May

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Children 8 and up are invited to a Track and Field Youth Camp on Sunday, May 28, from 10 a.m. to noon on the Taconic High School track.   Join high school coaches and student-athletes from Pittsfield High and Taconic High to learn about mental health benefits of youth sports and the fundamentals of various track and field events.   The event is sponsored by Movember, which will be giving away sweatshirts to the first 50 registered participants.   Check in on the day of the event begins at 9:30 a.m. Preregistration is available here.

Fire Weather Watch in Berkshire County

The National Weather Service has declared a fire weather watch in effect from Tuesday, May 16 until Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.   Dry conditions and gusty winds may result in rapid fire spread of ignition occurs. Gusts could be up to 35 miles per hour.    The most critical conditions will be between late morning and sunset each day.   Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the upper 60s to 70s. Temperatures on Wednesday will be in the upper 40s to 50s.

John Staber Receives Wright Brothers Award

Staber of Old Chatham, N.Y., is to receive the Federal Aviation Administration Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award this Saturday.    This is to commemorate his more than 50 years of accident-free flying and devoting much of his career to teaching others.    The presentation will be made at noon by Adina M. Papp, FAA Safety Team Program manager, at the Walter J. Turtles Must be Left in the Wild

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says keeping native turtles as pets is prohibited because it can harm the turtle and pose threats to wild turtle populations.   "Capturing a wild turtle and keeping it as a pet, even if only for a short time, is detrimental to that individual turtle and also to Vermont's turtle populations as a whole," said Vermont Fish and Wildlife herpetologist Luke Groff.  "Releasing captured turtles back into the wild comes with risks as well."     Groff said the risks include introducing diseases or disrupting the genetics of wild populations.    "Adult turtles often have

Stockbridge Man Pleads Guilty, Must Register as Sex Offender

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — On Tuesday, May 2 Joseph Smith, 45, of Stockbridge pled guilty to several charges stemming from a 2020 investigation involving photographs of an underage female.    Smith was sentenced to 5 years probation with conditions.
